Goat Hearders Need Love Too

You are only limited by your imagination as to what you are going to see next as you are driving down the streets of Antananarivo. Every day is a new experience and you never want to leave the apartment without the camera. This large heard of goats is led across the main bridge in this part of town, causing a huge traffic jam. Everyone seems to take it in stride as the streets are shared with anything that can move down or across them. Patience is a must if you drive here. It is one thing we have tried hard to learn. On the river bank, you can see the clothes drying in the sun after being washed in the river.

Paint Your Wagon

Move over Wells Fargo. The Old West is alive and well in Madagascar. These pictures were taken at a regular stage coach station on the outskirts of Antananarivo. These coaches are used to haul freight as well as an occasional passenger.

Loaded Pousse-Pousse

Some people really work hard moving their various loads from place to place. This is an overloaded pousse-pousse normally used to haul passengers. They pull these loads along the most crowded roads and have as much right to the road as anything else. They really slow traffic trying to get around them.

Transportation Modes

These little buses are loaded to the hilt in preparation for the trip. You see many breakdowns along the road. I wonder why.

They Load these carts down with some amazing loads. Many times these carts will have a load of bricks. The Zebu are slow but powerful animals.

The driver of the cart decided I had taken enough pictures, stopped the cart and came back and wanted money. We obliged with 500 Ariary (about 27 cents) and wished him Merry Christmas. He went on his way rejoicing.
