Bush Camp at Madikwe Reserve

Elder Uzelac from SLC and Elder Bird at the entrance to the Mosetlha Bush Camp. This is where you get the dust of Africa on your feet. It is the beginning of a great adventure, our first guided safari.

Sister Bird is preparing to inspect our camp lodging quarters. They are definately not lion-proof, but we slept well and were not awakened by any night visitors.
During the morning drive, we stopped in the middle of a large clearing for hot drinks and snacks. We are all well bundled up due to the very crisp morning air. It is winter here. Susan, our guide Kay, Sister Uzelac and the rest of our party are in front of our Land Rover bush vehicle.
During the night drive, we ran across this tired male lion. He could barely lift his head to greet us, but did let out a long series of very loud roars. He then laid his head back down and went fast asleep, showing how happy he was that we had come to see him.
Reflections of a drinking elephant.
How can an animal as elegant and graceful as a giraffe look so awkward and ungainly as one when he is grazing or drinking?
As always, the birds wanted their share of the Kodak moments. This beautiful bird is a Blue-eared Starling. When the sun hits it at the right angle, you see this beautiful iridescent blue color. At other times they look black.
We have taken many pictures of the Lilac-breasted Roller before and they are extremely beautiful and very photogenic. We were told by one of our safari mates that we should try to get a picture of one in flight in order to capture the true beauty of the wings. Well, we were lucky, and as you can see, it is truely a beautiful bird, especially in flight.
